Law Enforcement Training: A Domestic Violence Perspective

A
valuable law enforcement training program is one that offers a clear perspective on domestic violence. Between 85 and 95 percent of all domestic violence victims are women. Domestic violence is by far the leading cause of injury to women with approximately 5.3 million women suffering abuse every year. Of those, more than 1,000 victims are killed by an intimate partner.

Victims can be hesitant to seek a way out of their abusive circumstances. Even when law enforcement is called by a friend or neighbor, many victims will choose to deny the crime rather than have the offender arrested. As a result, victims of domestic violence can remain victims for years. Through law enforcement training, officers can learn to better understand domestic violence and provide victims with a way out of their silent prisons.

Law enforcement training sheds light on the psychology of being a victim, provides insight as to why men rape, presents a victim's view of domestic violence, and helps officers identify the traits and characteristics of battered individuals. Through law enforcement training, officers learn to identify victims in order to offer them an alternative to their dangerous situation.
