Criminal investigative analysis, also known as criminal profiling, is a systematic methodology using clues left at a crime scene to gain insight about the crime and the offender. Through criminal investigative analysis, experts can develop a personality profile, or indirect personality assessment, to begin to understand the motivation for the crime. 

Criminal investigative analysis is a proven science, and when conducted by trained examiners, the knowledge gained by this method can stand up in court as expert testimony. In a case where there are no witnesses and the offender has effectively covered his tracks, expert testimony can very well be what convicts a guilty perpetrator. 

Criminal investigative analysis is the process of combining knowledge of behavioral sciences with the facts of the investigation. Investigators learn to look at the details of the crime so that they can interpret criminal behavior with enough certainty to develop leads and provide expert testimony in court. The level of the investigator's knowledge of criminal investigative analysis directly impacts the credibility of the expert testimony provided in a court of law.
